brief overview

This is an introductory course to the basic principles of Biblical Hebrew with emphasis on morphology, phonology and syntax including some reading of selected portions of the Hebrew Old Testament. The focus will be on to parse and translate verbal forms;  translate basic Hebrew sentences; recognize vocabulary learned and read most prose passages of the Hebrew Bible with the aid of a lexicon.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will engage the students in the study of Biblical Hebrew language with an aim to equip them to read the Hebrew Bible (MT)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to gain:

  1. Thinking:
    To inform the students about the alphabets, vowel pointing, and basic grammar rules of Biblical Hebrew

  2. Skills:

    To help the students know and identify the letter and vowel pointing of Biblical Hebrew and enable them to read and translate the simple phrases from the Hebrew Bible (BHS)

  3. Attitude:
    To help the students know and identify the letter and vowel pointing of Biblical Hebrew and enable them to read and translate the simple phrases from the Hebrew Bible (BHS)

ASSIGNMENTS

Note: All quizzes and assignments are to be handwritten (Neat and readable) and must be submitted as scanned PDF documents on the LMS. Each day Quiz carries 20 points (converted into 10 Marks per week) which will contribute towards 60% of the Internal Assessment. Five weeks’ assignments carry 6 marks and the final week assignment carries 10 marks, which will contribute to the 40% of External Assessments.
